About the Project
Rocococo ~ Audiogame Fantastiqué is an audio game (i.e., the game has no visuals!) by Speed of Dark Studios designed to provide an immersive game experience to vision-impaired gamers. Players take on the role of a detective in a narrative-driven “French Revolution”-punk story, assisting the robotic royal butler in reassembling catchy synth-pop music tracks while evading the attention of the Queen.
Given the nature of the game, I am unable to share any screenshots or videos of gameplay. However, a free demo of the game is available on Steam, and I welcome you to try the game for yourself!
Contributions
As the project’s lead engineer, I was responsible for development and maintenance of the codebase throughout the entire lifetime of the project. I also provided design consultation to the product owner, identifying and proposing solutions for issues of system design and UX design.
For most of development, the team consisted solely of the project’s creator/composer and myself. At different phases of production, the team occasionally grew to include some additional contractors: the story writer, two voice actors, and for postproduction, two additional part-time engineers.
My responsibilities and contributions included:
Prototyping and finalizing all game mechanics to the specification of the product owner, ensuring the delivery of the creative vision
Conducting market research to ensure clear indication of game state in a game with no visuals, and applying findings to the game’s UI/UX design
Maintaining the project’s version control repository, applying proper use of branches to test new features in isolated environments
Providing mentorship to junior developers on topics of Unity, C#, and software design best practices through pair programming and code reviews
Preparing the project for Steam deployment and creating in-editor deployment tools that allow non-technical team members to release content updates
